An Honor Society for You
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges; Alpha Iota Rho is the MCC Chapter of PTK. Potential members are invited to join and must meet chapter eligibility requirements. A one-time membership fee is required for all members. The inductions of new members are conducted in the fall and spring semesters of each academic year.
Current eligibility requirements include a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher and completion of 12 semester hours or more in a two-year program. Benefits include recognition as academic scholars during the graduation ceremony.
Some MCC students accept the invitation to membership because they are attracted to the transfer scholarship opportunities, some accept membership for the leadership opportunities it presents, and some accept because it’s the first time they’ve been invited to join an honor society. All of our PTK members can be proud of their hard work and dedication to academics!
Phi Theta Kappa creates a unique linkage between our outstanding students at MCC with an international network of scholars. This is a great advantage and opportunity for our students as they come to know and work with other high-achieving, service-oriented, student leaders.
A SURPRISING PTK STATISTIC
Even if your goal is to transfer for a bachelor’s degree, it’s very important to complete your associate’s degree. MCC students should know that more than 70 percent of community college students who transfer with an associate degree successfully complete a baccalaureate degree. If you transfer to a Regent university in Iowa with your MCC associate’s degree, you are 15% more likely to be enrolled one year later then if you had transferred with 61 MCC credits (or just one course short of graduation)!
