MCC puts new spin on holiday cookie tradition

Marshalltown, IA – Marshalltown Community College is proud to announce the successful continuation of a beloved campus tradition, with a modern twist designed to enhance student support and holiday cheer. What started decades ago as a simple gesture of kindness has evolved into the exciting Annual Cookie Crawl, ensuring students feel welcomed and appreciated during the challenging end-of-semester season.

The original tradition dates back to the MCC Junior College era, and the history of its beginning was shared by Jo Johnson, mother of recently retired MCC faculty member George Johnson. Jo recalled that the custom was started by the Faculty Wives group, which formed because, at the time, married women were not allowed to be faculty members. They would home-bake cookies for students around Christmas as a warm gesture during a stressful time, often turning it into a friendly competition.

This year’s Cookie Crawl, held on Thursday, Dec. 4, put a new spin on the kindness. More than 100 students visited various departments (including Student Services, the Administration Office, the Foundation, the Library, Business & Community Solutions, and Information Technology) to collect cookies and engage with supportive staff members across campus. Students who visited all participating stations received a commemorative plate wrapped with a bow and a dozen or two donated treats to enjoy over break.

The event ensures students feel supported during a challenging time and helps connect them with essential campus resources that they may not have visited in the past.

MCC extends deep gratitude to the businesses and individuals whose generous donations made the Cookie Crawl possible. Special thanks to: Lara’s Bakery, Ma Browns Cookies & More LLC, Lillie Maes, Perkins, Great Western Food Service, Hy-Vee, Fareway, and more than 20 faculty and staff members for their contributions to student success.
