One of Only Seven Gunsmith Technology Degree Programs in the U.S.
Iowa Valley's Gunsmith Technology program is the only one of its kind in Iowa, and one of just seven two-year gunsmithing degree programs in the country. Students learn to build, repair, and modify firearms using industry-standard hand tools and machinery — starting with fundamentals in freshman year and moving into real customer repair work by sophomore year, working on guns that come in from actual outside clients.
The program covers metalwork, stockmaking, firearms repair, and machine operations, along with the business and finance courses graduates need if they want to open their own shop. Graduates go on to work for gun manufacturers, gun shops, sporting goods retailers, police departments, and the military — or start businesses of their own. The program has an established pipeline with Brownells, one of the largest firearms and outdoor gear retailers in the country, located just down the road in Grinnell.
Gunsmith Admission Requirements
The Gunsmith Technology AAS degree is a fall-start program with limited enrollment, ensuring students get direct instructor access and hands-on time with equipment. Graduates are eligible to pursue a Machine Tool Technology certificate, transfer to a four-year school, or enter the workforce directly.
