Why You Should take College Classes in High School

College Class in High School

Between sports, extracurricular activities and your schoolwork in high school most students have busy lives. So why take even more classes and even bigger…why take college classes while you are still in high school? Here are just some great reasons why you should take college credit while in high school.

College is an expensive cost…why not let someone else pay for it?

College can be a big expense even with financial aid. The great thing about taking college credit classes while you are still in high school is that you don’t have to pay for them. In Iowa, when you take college classes while still in  high school, the cost is covered by your district. You could save thousands of dollars on your college education by just taking a couple of courses. Some high schools may have restrictions so make sure to check with your high school counselor.

You ARE a college student

When you are taking college classes, you are considered a college student. What does that mean? You are able to use the resources that are available on campus. For academic assistance you have access to the library, tutors, the success center, advisors and so much more.

On the student life side, students are able to use the fitness center, attend athletic events for free, and attend student activities.

College experience

Taking college classes in high school is also a great way to become accustomed to how college works. You will be able to meet and interact with other college students and professors. This is also a great time to see how the college classes run, such as time commitment, taking notes and learning how to study for college classes.

The experience you receive taking college classes in high school will help your transition into being a full-time college student smoother. When you have earned your high school diploma and the next step is college, you will have added experience that students that didn’t take college credit will have.

On the right track

One of the most important things when starting college is to make sure you are taking the correct courses for the field you are interested in earning your degree in. When you take college credit in high school, advisors are available to help guide you in your studies. They can walk you through the best courses to take and where to start your education.

If you aren’t sure what you would like to pursue, college is a great time to explore and take a variety of courses, on someone else’s dime, while in high school. Even if this is the case, make sure you are taking courses that will count towards your education.
