The International Nurses Association has announced that MCC alum Vicki McKenna, RN, will be featured in a Spring 2017 issue of Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare. Vicki earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from MCC in 1990 and is currently a Staff Nurse and Wound Nurse at Mayflower Homes in Grinnell.

Vicki started serving patients at a young age, working first as a “candy striper” in middle school. After high school she became a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and then a Certified Medication Aide (CMA); she worked in that capacity for many years, also taking time off to raise her family. After returning to work at St. Francis Manor, she felt called to pursue a nursing degree and enrolled at Marshalltown Community College.

“When I was enrolled in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program at MCC, my intent was to get that degree and then work for awhile before attempting the Associate Degree Nursing program,” says Vicki. “Thankfully, my husband convinced me that I should just get both degrees done one right after the other. I worked as an LPN while I finished the ADN program, and have been in nursing since that time.”

Vicki has an extensive expertise in all facets of nursing, especially long-term care, dementia care, and geriatrics. She has been serving patients within Mayflower Homes in Grinnell since 2014, and she expects to be there until she decides to retire.

Vicki maintains a professional membership with the American Nurses Association. She attributes her success to her passion for nursing, as well as her compassion and love for people. “I love the residents at Mayflower and the stories they tell. I like making a difference in people’s lives, and I can tell you that we’re making a difference here!”

When she is not assisting her patients, Vicki enjoys knitting, reading, theatre, attending community activities, and spending quality time with her family.
