Happily, there is no new emergency news today! Our campuses are open to select students and employees only. Online classes are going smoothly; lab classes and events remain canceled until mid-April. Students can access services and staff through email. Our switchboards are accepting calls, but most staff are not on campus at this time. We hope you and your families are staying healthy and enjoying today’s spring weather. MCC computer labs are now available by appointment for current students. Commencement Information

2020 Commencement

Marshalltown Community College’s 2020 commencement ceremony is Friday, May 8, at 7 pm at the Student Activity Center; the ceremony includes December graduates, as well as those who will complete their graduation requirements in May 2020 or during the summer of 2020. All qualified graduates are encouraged to participate.

Commencement Regalia

Candidates for commencement may purchase regalia (includes cap, tassel, and gown for $25.50) beginning at 8 am on April 1, 2019 at the MCC Bookstore. It is required that all attending graduates purchase a cap, tassel, and gown through the MCC Bookstore.  Store hours the week of commencement are 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Thursday and 8 am to 7 pm on Friday. Unless an exchange is needed, all sales on commencement regalia are final.

Please wear appropriate attire under your gown. Shoes and clothing should be appropriate for the occasion; please do not wear flip-flops.

Students with a career total grade point average of 3.500 or higher, as of April 1, 2019, who attend the ceremony, will be given an honor cord when checking in prior to the ceremony.

Commencement Invitations

Invitations to the commencement ceremony will be available to purchase at the MCC Bookstore for 25¢ each beginning April 2, 2019.

May 8 instructions for graduates

There will not be an actual “practice” before commencement. Graduates will check in at the Babe Harder Gymnasium before 6:30 pm and be given instructions for procession. A staff member will assist you during the lineup process. Students arriving late will be seated as space allows.

Designated staff will lead graduates into the Student Activities Center promptly at 7 pm and direct them to the appropriate seats. Students should continue to stand after the processional music stops. Men should remove their caps and keep them off during the address to the graduates, putting them back on before the scholastic awards.

During the processional and ceremony, tassels should be worn on the right side of the mortarboard. After the appropriate remarks, graduates will be directed to the right side of the stage, where each graduate will hand his or her name card to the reader and wait for his/her name to be read before crossing the stage. At the appropriate time, the entire group will be directed to move the tassels to the left side.

Event seating

There is no reserved seating for families and guests. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open at 5:45 pm. All guests must be seated by 6:50 pm. There is handicap accessible seating in several locations in the Student Activity Center. Doors will be closed at 6:50 and no one will be permitted to enter the Student Activity Center. Overflow or late arrivals will be escorted to the Babe Harder Gymnasium, where the ceremony will be telecast.

Reception outside of Student Activity Center

A reception for all graduates, their families and friends will be held immediately following the ceremony outside of the Student Activity Center (weather permitting). Please ask all family members and guests to celebrate with you there. The rain location will be in Babe Harder Gymnasium.

Commencement Photos

The College Marketing Office staff will be taking photos before, during and after the ceremony for use in College publications and advertising, and on our website. If you don’t want to be photographed, just let our photographer(s) know.
