MHS top student attending MCC

MARSHALLTOWN – Marshalltown High School 2020 graduate Avygail Smith knew before she graduated from high school that the next step in her education was to attend Marshalltown Community College. Smith was one of seven MHS seniors that was ranked #1 in her class.
Smith’s number one class ranking was awarded to her because of a 4.0 GPA as well as graduating with honors. Smith is no stranger to MCC, either. She took advantage of a concurrent enrollment opportunity, and took college credits through her high school for free, beginning her sophomore year. She has already earned 35 credits and has only one year left before earning her Associate of Art Degree.
“Since I have only one year left and have enjoyed the other classes I have taken at MCC, it just made sense to finish my AA here,” commented Smith. Smith was also awarded the MCC Directors Scholarship. “One benefit of attending MCC is the financial savings. I will be saving so much money by finishing my degree at MCC and living at home instead of going straight to a 4-year university.”
Once Smith has earned her AA degree she plans to transfer to Iowa State University and major in Criminal Justice with a minor in Spanish. Smith commented how helpful Allie Osmundson, MCC Academic Advising Specialist, has been in her time already at MCC. “Allie has been such a big help for me. She is my advisor and she made registering for classes super easy and stress-free.”
