MARSHALLTOWN – Marshalltown Community College students Raquel Gonzales and Lotte Maria Van Malsen were selected to the 2020 All-Iowa Academic Team and were honored at a recent banquet in Des Moines.

The MCC Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the sponsoring organization for the nomination. Each year, two students may be nominated for the Career Pathway Option, which is reserved for students in vocational programs, and the other two for the Transfer Option, which is for students graduating with a two-year degree and plan on transferring to a 4-year college or university.

Gonzales was selected for her outstanding academic credentials and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in spring 2020. Gonzales came to MCC from Las Cruces, NM and played two years on the Tiger volleyball team. She is majoring in Criminal Justice and plans to transfer to a 4-year college to continue her studies and play volleyball.

Van Malsen was selected for her outstanding academic achievements and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in spring 2019. Van Malsen came to MCC as an international student from Tilburg, Netherlands. In her freshman year, she decided to join the Tiger women’s basketball team as a “walk-on” player and later earned a scholarship to play for a second year. She will graduate with an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. Her plans are to transfer to a 4-year college in Iowa to continue her studies and play basketball.

The honorees were accompanied to the recognition banquet by Phi Theta Kappa advisors, Pele Waddilove and P.J. Colbert, MCC college administration, and IVCCD board members.
