MCC offers 1st study abroad class

MCC Fundraiser for Costa Rica

MCC students recently held a Valentine’s Day back sale to help fundraise for the class.

Marshalltown Community College will offer a unique opportunity this summer for students to study abroad in Costa Rica for college credit. MCC social science Faculty Dr. Ramona Linville is leading the “Study Abroad in Peace and Conflict Resolution: Costa Rica” course during the Summer Session.

Students will be immersed in the culture when they travel to Costa Rica for this three credit class, June 7-19, as well as during class prior to travelling. Class is limited to 12 students. They will learn about the conflict resolution skills that a peaceful Costa Rica implements as a nation.

Linville believes this new study abroad course will benefit MCC students in a lot of ways. “This will have a lasting impact on students throughout their life. It will change their perception of the world as well as their own self-confidence, expand their networks, and building lasting friendships. When we invest in people, we are investing in our community. Allowing these students to learn about other countries will build their leadership skills. Learning about others helps us understand ourselves and appreciate our own experiences even more.”

The cost of the course is $2,500 per student. To help raise money for those who want to participate, fundraisers are being conducted at the college and in the community.

Those who would like to help are invited to donate through the MCC Foundation, student scholarships, support fundraisers, or sponsor a student. Contact Dr. Ramona Linville at Ramona.Linville@iavalley.edu or 641-844-5733.
