Bill Gutowski

Shear Colbert Symposium presenter, Dr. William Gutowski.

The second lecture of the Shear Colbert Symposium “Our Changing Climate: Directions and Choices” will be given on January 22, 2020 by Dr. William Gutowski. Gutowski is Professor of Meteorology at Iowa State University and a member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Prof. Gutowski will review the ways our climate is changing and the impacts of these changes, especially in Iowa. He will then discuss the different pathways for climate change the Earth might follow in the future, highlighting the choices in front of us for determining how the Earth’s climate will evolve.

Prof. Gutowski has served on national and international programs, such as the World Meteorological Organization’s World Climate Research Programme, that has guided the course of climate research. His work has had special focus on changing climate in regions of the world such as Africa, the Arctic and the U.S. His research on climate change has earned Gutowski global recognition and he also co-authored reports on climate for the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in Meteorology from M.I.T. in 1984 and is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.

The Shear Colbert Symposium was begun by the late MCC history professor, Dr. Tom Colbert. Colbert organized the Symposium in 1984 with the memorial funds for his predecessor, George Shear. Colbert continued to run the Symposium throughout his tenure, with topics originating with Shear’s research interests (railroads, Russia, and the CIA) and later ranging from historical topics to contemporary issues. This year’s theme is “Eat, Drink, Breathe: Life’s Essentials” with lectures focusing on those topics. The first lecture on water quality in Iowa was held in November.

The final speaker, Angie Tagtow, will present on April 15, 2020. Tagtow is Founder & Chief Strategist, Äkta Strategies, LLC, Doctoral Candidate, University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health; former Obama appointee as Executive Director, USDA Center for Nutrition Policy & Promotion. Her presentation will address transforming public health nutrition initiatives.

Gutowski’s lecture, “Our Changing Climate: Directions and Choices,” will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, Jan. 22, on the Marshalltown Community College campus, 3702 S. Center St., Marshalltown in Dejardin Hall. The lectures are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available during the event.
