La Patronal presents Fiesta de Perú to MCC

La Patronal graphicThe Marshalltown Community College Diversity Committee is sponsoring a performance of La Patronal for MCC students and staff on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 1 pm in Babe Harder Gym. The educational concert will include musical and dancing performances, interactivity with the audience, and an opportunity for students to ask questions of the Peruvian performers.

La Patronal is a unique brass band from Lima, Peru. Rooted in the tradition of ‘fiestas populares’ (town fairs common in rural villages across Latin America), La Patronal honors these gatherings, which celebrate tradition through fireworks, dancing, masks, and religious images. La Patronal members are direct descendants of rural musicians from Peru, and use this knowledge of folk culture in combination with their formal music studies to preserve their heritage while also bringing it to the present. Their lively performances encourage audience participation and dancing with contagious percussion and vibrant brass and winds.

Carolyn Briggs, MCC Diversity Committee Chair, explains, “We are looking forward to this fall celebration of diversity on our campus and the colorful Peruvian music and dancing that La Patronal will share with our students. It will be a fun and interactive performance that our students will enjoy.”
