Orpheum hosts Vijf Wind Quintet on Oct. 17

This month the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center will host the Vijf Wind Quintet on Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Orpheum Black Box Theater, 220 E. Main St., Marshalltown.

Founded in 2014, the Iowa City musical group is a reed quintet (oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon) with a wide repertoire — contemporary music, pieces from the classical era, romantic, French, jazz, Baroque, and a variety of pieces written originally for the ensemble.

The quintet includes Anna Catherine Peterson, oboe; Tony Mai, clarinet; Yiqun Chen, saxophone; Christine Burke, clarinet; and Keegan Hockett, bassoon.

Anna Catherine Peterson began studying at age 12 in Stillwater, MN. She has been a featured soloist with the Augsburg Symphony Orchestra on oboe and English horn. Anna regularly gives recitals and is a founding member of the Vijf Quintet.

Tony Mai is a native of Iowa City and a member of the UIOWA Woodwind Quintet, Trio Elegiaque, Clarinotes Quartet, and ConcertIA. He is also a permanent member of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band.

Yiqun Chen received a Masters of Arts in teaching music from the University of Southern California and a bachelor of music in performance with a concentration in saxophone and jazz studies from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University — Long Beach. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in saxophone performance and pedagogy at the University of Iowa.

Christine Burke graduated from Duquesne University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance. Since moving to Iowa, Burke has performed with the Center for New Music, Très Trio, the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Band, and the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band.

A native of West Des Moines, Hockett is pursuing a Bachelor of Music at the University of Iowa. He’s currently a member of multiple ensembles at the University of Iowa including the Symphony Band, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Reed Quintet, and Bassoon Trio.
