Kamar Essex Art Exhibit begins Sept. 30

Art Exhibit generic

Kamar Essex will be the next featured artist at the newest exhibit in the Ray Frederick Gallery, room 306, on the Marshalltown Community College campus. The exhibit opens with a reception at 12:15-1:30 pm, Wednesday, Sept. 30, and will be on display through noon Friday, Oct. 23.

The freelance artist says he’s been surrounded by art since he was four years old. “I had an uncomfortable urge to draw on white walls,” says Kamar. “Every time my drawing got removed or painted over, it was just another chance to draw something else. That’s probably why I’m not so attached to a lot of my work.”

Kamar grew up all over the United States, enrolling in a different school every year from first grade to his junior year of high school. He says art was always a commonality for him growing up.

“You’ll find a lot of ‘confusion’ in my pieces,” adds Kamar. “I don’t get bogged down on what the viewer will get out of my work, because the viewer usually only sees the end result, not the process.”

The Ray Frederick Gallery is open weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm. For more information contact MCC Art Professor Tim Castle at 641-844-5776 or
