Last-Dollar Scholarships

Students enrolled in qualified programs at Marshalltown Community College and Iowa Valley Grinnell are now eligible to apply for the new Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship program. The Last-Dollar Scholarship will pay for a student’s tuition and qualified fees if enrolled in one of many designated career technology programs. That’s right … the State of Iowa will pay the student’s tuition and qualified fees, whatever is left after applying any federal and state grants/scholarships.
For the 2021-22 academic year, the qualifying MCC and IVG programs for Last-Dollar Scholarships are:
- Marshalltown Community College
- Iowa Valley Grinnell
- Automotive Repair Technology (one-year and two-year programs)
- Business Administration
- Gunsmith Technology
Who is eligible?
Group 1: New High School Graduates
Eligibility requirements include:
Lifetime Maximum 5 semesters Requirement: You must enroll in a qualified program of study full-time or enroll in an eligible program part-time along with an approved work-based learning program for the fall immediately following high school graduation, apply for all other available state and federal grants and scholarships, and meet ongoing requirements. (Summer enrollment does not count toward continuous enrollment but does count toward the tuition award maximum if you receive Iowa LDS funds for summer semester.) |
Group 2: Adult Learners
Eligibility requirements include:
Lifetime Maximum 8 semesters (part-time or equivalent) Requirement: You must remain continuously enrollment in the program taking at least 6 credit hours each semester. (Summer enrollment does not count toward continuous enrollment but does count toward the tuition award maximum if you receive Iowa LDS funds for summer semester.) If you already receive full tuition through federal and state grants, Iowa LDS awards $250 if you are enrolled full-time, or $125 if you are enrolled part-time. |

As the name implies, the Last-Dollar Scholarships are intended to cover any remaining gap between federal and state grants/ scholarships and tuition and qualified fees.

The $13 million Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship program will help more Iowans achieve education or training beyond high school leading to high-demand jobs by helping pay tuition for designated programs of study up to two-year degrees. This will create opportunities for good-paying careers that meet employers’ needs for more skilled workers while growing Iowa’s economy. Both new high school graduates and adults already in the workforce or unemployed, and who want to improve their skills, can participate.
