Electro-Mechanical Systems Technologist
Electro-Mechanical Technicians combine a knowledge of mechanical technology with an understanding of electrical and electronic circuits to keep businesses and industries up and running. They install, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade electronic and computer-controlled mechanical systems, such as robotic assembly machines. Electro-Mechanical Technicians typically do the following:
- Read blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to determine the method and sequence of assembly of a part, machine, or piece of equipment
- Verify dimensions of parts, using precision measuring instruments, to ensure that specifications are met
- Operate metalworking machines to make housings, fittings, and fixtures
- Repair and calibrate hydraulic and pneumatic assemblies
- Test the performance of electro-mechanical assemblies, using test instruments
- Install electronic parts and hardware, using soldering equipment and hand tools
MCC’s Electro-Mechanical Systems Technologist Programs
Our Electro-Mechanical classes are conducted in a state-of-the-art classroom and lab in the advanced manufacturing wing of the Marshalltown campus. A great deal of hands-on work with electrical and mechanical components happens in our high tech lab area.
There are three MCC Electro-Mechanical Systems programs:
- A one-year Electrical Maintenance Mechanic Diploma (41 credits) program for those who want to maintain, repair and service electrical and electronic equipment found in industry.*
- A one-year Industrial Maintenance Mechanic Diploma (38 credits) program for those who want to maintain, repair and service mechanical systems found in industry.*
- A two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree that includes fundamentals of maintaining, repairing, and servicing the sophisticated production and operational equipment systems used in commercial and industrial complexes. Students learn high-tech solutions for the range of responsibilities they may encounter on the job, plus safety and environmental techniques to keep their workplace hazard free.
* Credits from either of the diploma programs can be transferred toward completion of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program.

In general, employment of Electro-Mechanical Technicians is projected to grow 4 percent through 2026; the median annual wage for Electro-Mechanical Technicians was $55,610 in 2016. These professionals are generalists in technology, and their broad skills set helps sustain demand for their services in a variety of industries and employment sectors.
