Education

Earlly Childhood Education class

Think about your favorite teachers … what were the qualities that made you appreciate them? Your answers will tell you what makes a good teacher. A teacher must be knowledgeable and able to recognize and respond to individual differences in students. A teacher should be dependable, patient, and creative. The goals of the basic teacher education programs at Marshalltown Community College are fourfold:

  • Develop future teachers committed to the continuing process of learning with an emphasis on learning to teach.
  • Develop the ability to take active roles promoting student learning.
  • Envision alternative solutions to the myriad of challenges in today’s classrooms.
  • Prepare for transfer to a four-year teacher education program.

MCC’s Education Programs

  1. A two-year Associate of Arts (AA) Transfer Degree for those who want to transfer their MCC credits and complete a baccalaureate/bachelor’s degree at a university.

The links under Degrees Awarded (below) specify our different program course requirements.

Admissions Partnership Program with Iowa State, UNI and Iowa

MCC participates in the Admissions Partnership Program with Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa to enable MCC students to transfer credits seamlessly to any of the state universities. Participants are dual-enrolled at MCC and the university with access to academic advising and student services at both institutions. The universities guarantee admission into the desired degree program, provided all requirements are met. Ask the MCC Admissions Office for more information!

Education Careers & Job Outlook

Employment of education-related occupations is projected to grow 5 percent through 2028, about as fast as the average for all occupations, with about 512,900 new jobs projected to be added during that timeframe. Enrollment is expected to increase at both the college and university level and among public elementary and secondary schools, so postsecondary teachers and preschool, elementary and secondary school teachers will be needed to meet the demand.
