Iowa Valley Grinnell honors students & inducts PTK members

GRINNELL – Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell honored several students on Wednesday, May 1, recognizing those intending to graduate and presenting numerous leadership and academic achievement awards. Thirteen (13) Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell students were also inducted into the Beta Sigma Chi chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

The new PTK inductees are, by hometown:

  • Brooklyn – Michael Kriegel, Jack Smith and Bryce Solem.
  • Grinnell – Jarrett DeKoning, Rebekah McCombs and Warren Ware
  • Montezuma – Daniel Bryan, Tessa Geiger, Austin Hall, Jestene Moyer, Mya Pargeon, Brett Pope and Nolan Reynolds.

The guest speaker was Paul Pohlson, Iowa Valley Community College board member from Poweshiek County. Pohlson’s address the students about getting involved in the communities that they live in.

MaryAnne Nickle, Dean of Iowa Valley Grinnell, administered the oath of membership. Current Beta Sigma Chi members Jennifer McAlexander, PTK president and Jesse Dudley conducted the ceremony.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,275 chapters on college campuses. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918. Phi Theta Kappa is recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society of two-year colleges.

After a brief break in the ceremony, Nickle, welcomed students, family members, faculty and staff who gathered for the ceremony and reception held on the Iowa Valley Grinnell campus.

Nickle expressed congratulations on behalf of the faculty and staff to the 28 diploma and associate degree graduate applicants and the winners of awards presented for academic achievement and campus leadership.

The Iowa Valley Grinnell graduates will walk across the stage at Marshalltown Community College Commencement on Friday, May 10, in Marshalltown. Faculty members and support staff presented awards as follows:

  • Wellborn Commitment to Excellence Scholarship: Brighton Rouse, Mechanicsville, IA.
  • Outstanding Academic Achievement Award: Lane Thompson, Grinnell, IA & Carisa Van Zee, Montezuma, IA
  • Outstanding Commitment: Rebecca McCombs, Grinnell, IA, Elvis Soto, Marshalltown, IA & John (JR) Shepard, Toledo, IA.
  • Outstanding Leadership: Brighton Rouse, Mechanicsville, IA
  • Outstanding New Student: Jarrett DeKoning, Grinnell, IA
  • Outstanding Engagement: Scott Tibbetts, Brooklyn, IA & Macy Cline, Brooklyn, IA.
  • Outstanding Ability to Overcome Barriers: Angel Lindstrom, Grinnell, IA & Greg Floyd, Montezuma, IA
  • Outstanding Graduate: Jennifer McAlexander, Grinnell, IA.
  • Outstanding Dedication: Martin Hunt, Grinnell, IA
  • Outstanding Gunsmith: Nathan Blankenship, Brooklyn, IA.
  • All-Iowa Academic Team: Jennifer McAlexander, Grinnell, IA.
