MCC hosts Veterans Day ceremony
Tuesday / November 14, 2017
Retired Navy Commander Mark Feilmann was the guest speaker when the Marshalltown Community College Collegiate Veterans Association held its annual Veterans Day ceremony last week.
Feilmann, now an adjunct math instructor for MCC, told the group about his career as a Navy pilot, stationed mostly in Norfolk, VA and in Italy. He talked about the challenges of landing a plane on a navy carrier and about the two instances when he nearly “bought the farm,” once when he was piloting alone and once when he was instructing a student pilot. Feilmann said his years in military service were a great experience for him and for his family, and he thanked all those who have served in any branch of the military.
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadets posted the colors, followed by welcoming remarks from Dr. Robert Moore (U.S. Air Force). “We are here today to honor our heroes, to remember their achievements, their courage and their dedication, and to say thank you for their sacrifices,” Moore said. “Thinking of the heroes who join us in this group today and those who are here only in spirit, a person cannot help but feel awed by the enormity of what we encounter.”
Others who played a part in the ceremony were Pele Waddilove, CVA Sponsor (U.S. Army); P.J. Colbert, CVA Sponsor; Amber Bolen, CVA Sponsor; and MCC student-veterans Emilio Hernandez (U.S. Marine Corps), Kassie Felling (CVA President, U.S. Marine Corps), Moises Fonseca (CVA Vice President, U.S. Marine Corps), and Drew Elliott (U.S. Navy).
The Veterans Honor Tree was on display during the ceremony so anyone in attendance could hang stars with the names of (or notes about) a veteran(s) in their family.
All veterans in attendance received a free lunch courtesy of MCC Food Service (Great Western Dining) after the ceremony.
