College Planning En Español is Mar. 26

Marshalltown Community College will host its second annual College Planning En Español event on Sunday, March 26, from 2 to 4:30 pm. Participants will learn how to enroll at MCC, how to access financial aid and scholarship resources, and hear from Latino students about their experiences at MCC.

“The goal of this event is to foster dialogue with Latino families to promote learning, to help them navigate the academic environment, and to overcome educational and personal barriers to success,” says Valerie Ruiz, MCC Academic Advising Specialist. “Our intent is to honor the diversity of Latino families and serve as an essential source of support as they travel on the road to academic success and economic security.”

The guest speaker for the event will be Marshalltown business woman Luisa Ortega, owner of Midnight Ballroom. A longtime Marshalltown resident, Ortega ran for Marshall County Auditor in last fall’s election. She is very active in the community, most recently chairing the Marshall County Fourth of July Celebration and serving on the Orpheum Theater Center Advisory Committee.

Topics to be covered include how to plan and prepare for college, educational excellence, exploring career options through job shadowing, financial aid and scholarships, and more.

The event will be held in the Iowa Valley Continuing Education Conference Center (at the southwest corner of the MCC campus, Door #11) in Dejardin Hall, room 808. Registration will be from 2 to 2:30 pm, followed by an informational program, student panel, and a light meal with faculty. Childcare and the meal will be provided. Drawings will be held for a variety of prizes and a $500 scholarship.

For meal planning purposes, please RSVP to Valerie Ruiz at 641-844-5709 or Valerie.Ruiz@iavalley.edu.
