MCC & IVG students named to 2017 All-Iowa Academic Team

Marshalltown Community College (MCC) students Barbara Araoz and Hannah Stone and Iowa Valley Grinnell (IVG) students Shane Gibson and Kayte Werner were honored as members of Phi Theta Kappa’s 2017 All-Iowa Academic Team at a banquet in Des Moines on March 1. The top Iowa community college students are nominated each year by the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at each campus.
Barbara Araoz of Argentina is studying Psychology at MCC; her future plans after graduation are undecided. Araoz received the NJCAA Pinnacle Academic Achievement Award in 2015-16. She was named to the NJCAA Region XI First Team Academic All-Region in Fall 2015 and Spring 2016, and she earned NJCAA Region XI Honorable Mention for women’s basketball in 2015-16. She has been named to the MCC Dean’s List each term she’s been enrolled at MCC.
Hannah Stone of Marshalltown is studying Biology at MCC with a biomedical emphasis; she plans to transfer to the University of Iowa after graduating in May. Stone is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has been named to the MCC Dean’s List each term she’s been enrolled at MCC. Stone received the MCC Outstanding Biology Student Award in Spring 2016.
Shane Gibson of Grinnell is pursuing a Liberal Arts degree at Iowa Valley Grinnell. He plans to transfer to Colorado State University after graduation. Gibson is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has been named to the MCC Dean’s List. He received an IVG Outstanding Academic Achievement Award in Spring 2016.
Kayte Werner of Grinnell is also pursuing a Liberal Arts degree in Grinnell; her future plans after graduation are undecided. Werner is a member and Chapter Secretary of Phi Theta Kappa and has been named to the MCC Dean’s List.
The honorees were accompanied to the recognition banquet by Dr. Robin Lilienthal, MCC Provost; Dr. Patrick Kennedy, MCC Dean of Academic Affairs; MaryAnne Nickle, Dean of Iowa Valley Grinnell; Barbara Hall, IVG PTK Advisor; PJ Colbert, MCC PTK Advisor; Dr. Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor; and IVCCD Board of Director President Yvonne Mallory.
